Chave’s 2016 Hermitage isn’t the most intense or massive wine the estate has ever made, but it’s a delightfully pleasant, approachable effort from a year when hail damage cut production in half. It’s full-bodied, cuddly-soft, and velvety in texture, with notes of black olives and black cherries, and a long, harmonious finish. I expect it to harden up a little in the bottle over the next year or two, but it’s great now and should last at least 15 years, if not longer.
